2006 Waipara James Hardwick Riesling |
Muddy Water
The Muddy Water vineyard, situated on the sunny slopes above the Waipara Valley in North Canterbury, on the South Island of New Zealand, creates wine as distinct as the land itself. Protected from cool sea breezes by a range of coastal hills, with cold, frosty winters, warm, dry summers and dry, sunny autumns Muddy Water’s vineyard creates intensely flavored, ripe grapes and wine with concentrated fruit and mineral qualities.

2006 Waipara James Hardwick Riesling
Bouquet: Intense lime and orange.
Palate: Lime and minerally fruit characters with some spicy oak. Concentrated and juicy.
Serving Suggestions: Serve chilled as an aperitif, or with grilled seafood or Asian dishes.Reviews and Awards
93 points "Medium-dry, with intense lime, tangerine blossom and strong mineral salt characters. A satisfying mix of vibrant fruit and knife-edge acidity that’s the Kiwi equivalent of a German Kabinett but with slightly higher alcohol."
Gourmet Traveller - Feb/Mar 2007
Best of the Best, 2006 "Lovely dry minerally style with echoes of river-stone yet a touch more generous. A fine wine from North Canterbury with some finesse. Different for New Zealand , still unfolding yet still a well-spined Riesling statement which works well with fish and great also with tapas or snacks around the pool."
F&B (NZ)
89 points "A plump, round Riesling with honeyed pineapple aromas, Muddy Water's James Hardwick is made from non-boytrytized fruit so it retains a wonderfully clear citrus character. Melon and pineapple flavors give it some fat, but the long finish is dominated by peals of lime-ridden fruit."
Wine Enthusiast, September 20072005 New Zealand Chardonnay
Bouquet: Ripe fruit, marmalade, and toast.
Palate: Intense, minerally fruit characters with some spicy oak. Bright and brisk.
Serving Suggestions: Butternut squash ravioli, vegetable risotto, fresh salmon.Reviews and Awards
“Muddy Water Chardonnay from Waipara in New Zealand comes close to the Burgundian paradgm, with an oaky veneer through which the minerals shine like jewels. It is not cheap: but neither are those matching wines from Burgundy, and you won't easily find a Burgundy with quite this Silver Award finish or leathery undertow. It is a wine full of character.”
New Statesman UK - June 20072006 Waipara Pinot Noir
Coming Soon2006 Waipara Slowhand Pinot Noir
Bouquet: Black cherries, ripe fruit, savory notes.
Palate: Sweet black cherry and red fruit well integrated with spicy oak and savory hints. Focused and elegant, with good mid-palate depth and excellent overall balance.
Serving Suggestions: Lamb, duck, and game.Reviews and Awards
Slightly misty, orange-tinged red in colour, soft preserved plum and red leather nose, with just a hint for dried autumn leaves/ forest floor character on the nose. The front has a beautiful, silky texture, couching subtle plum and redcurrent flavours before a great earthy depth takes control through the mid palate. The finish is long, fine and savoury. Unusually refined, and very good. Lamb (or wild boar) off a spit would go fantastically well here.
