Muddy Water

The Muddy Water vineyard, situated on the sunny slopes above the Waipara Valley in North Canterbury, on the South Island of New Zealand, creates wine as distinct as the land itself. Protected from cool sea breezes by a range of coastal hills, with cold, frosty winters, warm, dry summers and dry, sunny autumns Muddy Water’s vineyard creates intensely flavored, ripe grapes and wine with concentrated fruit and mineral qualities.

"Full-flavoured, medium-dry Riesling with strong apple and lime characters. Sweetness is balanced by fine acidity."
Decanter Magazine, February 2009

"Crisp and elegant with lively, racy acidity and bright citrus; long, fresh, and beautifully balanced."

Anthony Dias Blue - The Tasting Panel Magazine, June 2008

"The James Hardwick 2007 contains a little botrytis and was fermented in stainless-steel tanks down to 15 grams per litre residual sugar. It has a simple, waxy nose with lanolin and beeswax. The palate is light with touches of apricot and orange zest. Medium length with good balance, delicate and pretty with a touch of rosewater on the aftertaste, this is a commendable Riesling."

Robert Parker - May 2008

"Already delicious, this Waipara wine is a notably rich, medium style (16g/litre or residual sugar.) Light lemon/green, it is weighty (13% alcohol), with intense grapefruit/lime flavours, fresh, lively, finely balanced and long"
Winestate Magazine, "Michael Coopers Recent Releases", March/April 2008

"Intense, medium-dry Riesling with strong apple and lime flavors. Subtle sweetness is perfectly balanced by fine, juicy acidity. The finish lasts forever. An ethereal texture completes the picture. Lovely wine."
Gourmet Traveller, Dec/Jan 2008

Best of the Best, 2007

"Just off-dry. A lovely fruit character to this wine gives it immediate appeal with light foods and white meats, and still opening up. Finesse and a lot of longevity makes this a wine of some considerable distinction. A great Waipara statement unfolding."

Exceptional
"An aroma that’s both floral/tropical and has the classic kerosene-ish note that defines some Rieslings. The entry is loaded with minerals and spice. A tiny bit of residual sugar (.66) is balanced perfectly by .9 acidity and 2.94 pH! This is a simply fabulous wine!"

Dan Berger's Vintage Experience's, February 2010

"Flavoursome dry (seven grams per litre residual sugar) riesling with appealing purity. Strong mineral salts and lime/citrus flavours are supported by delicious, mouthwatering acidity. Powerful wine with plenty of cellaring potential."
