Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard
Hermann J. Wiemer is regarded as one of the pioneers of viticulture and winemaking in the Finger Lakes. He was born in Germany into an influential winegrowing family and attended Germany’s premier winemaking and viticultural institutions. In New York, Hermann discovered the cool climate and gravelly soil of the Finger Lakes, which reminded him of his family’s Mosel vineyards. After years of observation and research, he chose a vineyard site on the west bank of Seneca Lake to grow classic European varietals, and his first vintage in 1979 was award-winning. In the nearly 40 years since then, the winery has been lauded as one of the nation’s premier white wine producers. Today, the winemaking is managed by Hermann’s long-term winemaker, Fred Merwarth.
